However, the modern world needs much more than reprocessing a bottle that we throw into the trash. This is where we are confronted with Sponge Economy, it presents a new vision where resources are absorbed like a sponge, trapped, and kept in an endless loop within the system.
1. Why Isn't Recycling Enough?
Recycling is actually an 'ultimatum' intervention. We try to save a product after it has been produced and consumed. However, most of the time the material quality decreases (downcycling) and eventually waste is generated again.
Sponge Economy it shifts the focus from “waste management” to “value preservation.” Just as a sponge absorbs and traps water, the economy aims to keep raw materials, energy, and labor within the system.

- Product As a Service: The prominence of the right to use instead of ownership (for example, purchasing a lighting service instead of buying a light bulb)
3. A New Opportunity for the Business World
“Zero Waste” is not just an environmental slogan, but also a profitable business model. Waste is actually a design flaw and it means cost. Companies that embrace the sponge economy;
- It minimizes raw material risks,
- Increases customer loyalty (through repair and maintenance services),
- Complies early with legal regulations (such as the Green Deal).
Result: The Future is Hidden in an 'Absorptive' Structure
Nature never produces waste; the output of one is the input of another. We also need to liken our economy to this magnificent 'sponge' structure. By not stopping at recycling and placing design at the center of circularity, we can build a future in which the concept of 'waste' is erased from dictionaries.
